It may sound like a scene out of Orson Wells’ War of the Worlds, but New Yorkers are stumbling upon giant eggs that are taking over notable landmarks. Over 260 large eggs are part of the Fabergé Big Egg Hunt, which is a public art display and interactive contest to raise awareness and funds for charity. Each egg is designed by a globally renowned artist, designers or photographer, including Ralph Lauren, Jeff Koons and RETNA.
People can take part in the two week contest, ending April 17th, by downloading The Big Egg Hunt New York app through iTunes and Google Play, which notifies users of the location of all the eggs and alerts them when they are near the eggs. When people check in at each egg they are entered to win one of three extraordinary precious gemstone pendants created by Fabergé that value up to $50,000.
Fabergé is one of the most iconic jewelry companies throughout the world. Starting in the 19th century, Fabergé has become famous for their series of fifty lavish and ingenious Imperial Easter Eggs.
Following the two week hunt, all the eggs will be on display at Rockefeller Center in a final exhibition that is free and open to the public from April 18th – 25th. The Big Egg Hunt with conclude with a spectacular high profile online live auction of select eggs through Paddle8.
Money raised during the auction will benefit the conservation foundation Elephant Family and Studio in a School, which help protect Asian elephants and their habitats and bring visual arts to New York City’s public schools, respectively.
