Getting to Know DUMBO

New York boasts numerous desirable places to live, but none have seen as much attention as DUMBO in Brooklyn. With a stunning view of the skyline, unique shops and not as congested as Manhattan, there is nothing not to love about the area, which is an acronym for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass. As the area is constantly evolving, residents are curious to find out what the area has to offer. A group of Brooklynites are tackling this issue with the launch of the new site, Dumbo Life & Style, which covers everything in the Dumbosphere, from restaurants to shops to real estate.

“We started Dumbo Life & Style to broadcast all the great places and people we know around Dumbo,” Lindsey Hook, Creative Director of Dining and Events, said at Atrium during the launch party. “You’ll find updates about what’s going on around DUMBO, but you might also see a more personal approach to coverage than you’re used to seeing.”atrium-dumbo

During the launch party people enjoyed hors d’oeuvres from one of the local hotspots, Atrium. From eggplant appetizers to the delicious fried oyster and wine, the event was devoted to noticing and appreciating what DUMBO has to offer.

“DUMBO is a unique neighborhood with one of a kind shops and restaurants. Residents take pride in the fact that the neighborhood is small, giving it a feeling of exclusivity,” she said.

Walking throughout the cobblestone streets, people can notice that it feels similar to Tribeca with an “old New York” feel. “But DUMBO is its own place, maybe a little more esoteric. There is a high stay rate in DUMBO…most people that move here are dedicated to the neighborhood,” she said.

For New Yorkers, DUMBO might just seem like a place that has an amazing view of the Manhattan skyline, but there is much more to the area. The relatively new area has struggled to find an identity that can be noticed by residents and visitors. “I think the identity of the neighborhood is still being defined. We hope DLS can help people identify what makes Dumbo unique,” she said.

Getting the public together and creating a neighborhood vibe is one of the goals for DUMBO Life and Style. Throughout the year they plan to partner with local businesses for food and wine tastings, art events, parties and meet and greets.

“We hope Dumbo Life and Style can help foster a sense of community and culture by focusing on the people here, and maybe help illuminate the identity of the neighborhood,” Hook said.
