Fearless Leads to Flawless

by
What would you do if you weren’t afraid? This question was posed by Fearless Beauty charity founder Heather Packer, and her non-profit aims to elevate the quality of life of many underprivileged women in India. Packer’s inspiration for the nonprofit organization came after a recent trip to Rishikesh. This municipal board lies on the foothills of the Himalayas, and is believed to be the place where Lord Vishnu appeared. This city is also considered to be the world capital of yoga, being home to the 133 year-old Kailash Ashram Brahmavidyapitham school of Vedantic studies. Upon Packer’s return to the states she decided to begin the journey that would help bring her dream to life.

The mission of the charity is to provide vocational training for underprivileged girls who want to learn the art and skill of hair styling.  Fearless Beauty’s inaugural class is set to begin in early 2015 in conjunction with the Khushi Foundation; a charity which provides medical, educational, and spiritual support to the children of Rishikesh. The full volunteer charity is dedicated to improving living conditions of the less fortunate that reside in The Gateway to the Garhwal Himilayas. Fearless Beauty offers women the opportunity to learn the hair styling trade and provides them with a skill linked to sustainable income and personal independence.

“My vision was to launch a program that inspires other hairdressers across the country to volunteer and teach,” said Packer. “The skills hair stylists use everyday are universal. People around the world can learn this trade and become empowered, and economically self-sufficient. Sharing our skills can make a difference.”

The curriculum for the classes and mentoring will mirror those of Cutler Salon in New York City, and will be taught by Packer, as well. The inaugural class will include 10 teenage girls from the Kushi Foundation who will be offered a once in a lifetime opportunity.

This past Monday a fundraiser was held with Cutler Salon founder Rodney Cutler and head-stylist Rachel Bodt at the Cutler Salon (465 West B-Way) and offered blow-drys by professional stylists on a donation basis. A raffle was also held with prizes, including Broadway show tickets, beauty care packages, and 5-star hotel reservations throughout the city.  The fundraiser was beyond successful raising $13,000 and surpassing the $10,000 goal.

Packer’s charity venture is an example of a dream coming to life.  What greater pleasure is there than donating your time and skill to help others progress in their own lives?  This fundraiser should provide the Fearless Beauty charity with all the supplies and rental fees needed for  success.  Although this could come across as cliché, a famous visitor of Rishikesh, John Lennon once said, “You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one. I hope someday you’ll join us. And the world will live as one.”
