New York is the known for numerous traditions, but none are as special as Christmas in New York. From the iconic Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree to the marvelous department store window displays, this time of the year seems to be magical.

Lord & Taylor, the famous department store celebrating 100 years on Fifth Avenue, unveiled their display last week. “This year our windows look at the past while looking into the future,” Liz Rodbell, President of Lord & Taylor said.

Surrounded by twinkling garland, the five windows capture the warmth and togetherness that the holidays evoke. Embarking on a state-of-the art journey, people will explore joyful scenes in an enchanted mansion during the holidays. One of the scenes that echos this feeling includes numerous Victorian bird houses that are being decorated for Christmas by cardinals. Other scenes include “The Heritage Gallery” and “Hall of Wisdom” to reflect on the store’s history, and look to the future with their first time using video wall technology.

To kick off the holiday season, music sensation Nick Jonas joined Lord and Taylor to help unveil the windows and perform a Christmas melody and songs from his self-titled debut album. From his hit single “Jealous” to “I’ll Be Coming Home for Christmas,” the crowd sang along with Jonas as he performed on Fifth Avenue.

“I’m very excited to be here and be a part of the launch of the holiday windows,” Jonas said. “It is an incredible thing. I am from the East Coast and obviously Lord & Taylor is a big presence in the East Coast and I am thrilled to be a part of this.”

After his performance, Jonas headed inside the flagship store to take pictures with hundreds of fans and handed out autographed copies of his new album.

Lord & Taylor is one of the first department stores to showcase their windows this season, and throughout the next week others will be unveiling their holiday windows. Macy’s is set to unveil their display on Thursday, November 20th at 5:30 p.m. and Saks 5th Avenue will kick-off their holiday celebration on Monday, November 24th at 6:30 p.m.

“It’s really important for me to spend time with my family, friends and fans during the holiday season,” Jonas said. “It is tough; I am very busy these days, but I try to block out those windows where I can take time to be with them.”
