Light Up Winter with ‘Illuminations’

With Winter weather in full throttle, it’s getting harder to get your fix of sunlight. While it may not supply you with your fill of Vitamin D, Stephen Knapp‘s ‘Illuminations’ exhibit is sure to bring a lot of light into your life. The solo exhibition is currently on view at both the Louis K. Meisel Gallery and the Bernarducci.Meisel.Gallery through January 31st, 2015.

The artist is known for his unique manipulation of light; Knapp harnesses light and directs it through mirrors and glass to create complex and stunning abstract art. Placed inside the pieces of glass are thin layers of color, which project bright, luminous colors onto the walls on which his work is displayed. Each piece looks different from different angles, giving viewers a unique perspective of each work. Knapp’s work, or ‘lightpaintings,’ as they are referred to, vary in size — from a mere few feet to up to 12 x 10 x 9 feet long.

Each gallery hosts a different display of lightpaintings, with most of the larger works housed at the Louis K. Meisel Gallery downtown. Looking at these beautiful works of art is not only pleasing to the eyes, but to the mind, as well. The physics, calculations and manipulation of the glass and mirrors to produce the final product is intricate and complex, and gives viewers a glimpse into how much work must go into just one piece.

Stephen Knapp has been experimenting with light for quite some time — he began his career as a photographer before making the switch to alternative mediums. The artist is known worldwide for his large scale, site-specific installations and we are lucky that he is currently allowing New Yorkers to check out his work.
