Alex Mitow’s All-American Diner: A Pop Up!

by

Everything’s popping up these days: Books. Kardashians. Your in-laws. But it’s undeniable that the pop-up du jour is in the form of the fly-by-night seat-of-its-pants restaurant.

The latest candidate to the craze will be Alex Mitow’s All-American Diner: A Pop Up!, which will run April 17-20th in the the now-defunct Noah’s Ark deli (399 Grand Street). Once the home of the world’s largest matzo ball, the venue will be transformed (by the man behind Los Perros Locos) into an underground performance art, music, and culinary space, hosting a different culinary experience each of the four nights.

Playing on the idea of what it means to be “all-American”, themes will range from a retro-inspired evening with Sylvana Joyce + The Moment, a Debaucherous DISCO Diner Dinner featuring Andrew Andrew and DJ Azucar!, to a pan-Latin night hosted by the Dip-Sters crew and an S&M Sunday Gravy.

“Ever since Florent closed, there hasn’t really been any kind of over-the-top diner full of great food and wacky antics,” says Mitow,  on the inspiration behind his event. “That’s the vibe we want to bring back in the pop-up, with our own twist. We are using the pop-up to showcase all the diversity that we love about New York in the setting of a really pimped-out ‘all-American’ diner.”

Thursday, April 17th will kick off with Time Out New York’s The Empire Club, a one-night members-only celebration of NYC’s culinary past, present, and future. Guests will be treated to a six-course dinner set to the tune of gypsy rockers Sylvana Joyce + The Moment with free beer from Duvel.

On Friday, April 18th the Debaucherous Disco Diner Dinner Party will feature Andrew Andrew and Azucar! featuring Essex, Precolumbian, and ISL. Excess will be the theme of the night, with music from the Stones to the Scissor Sisters and reimagined diner favorites like Pink Castle Sliders, Disco Biscuits and Tricky Disco Fries.

Saturday, April 19th the All-American turns Pan-American with a Pan-Latin Night, Comedera Jevy, hosted by the Dip-Sters, a “Hipster Dominican Collective” that has come onto the party scene with their own twist on everything Latin culture. Guests will enjoy whole roasted pigs and mofongos set along Latin grooves.

The last night, Sunday, April 20th, will play host to an S&M Sunday Gravy, with wine and spaghetti & meatballs for all.
