Kokum: A Delicious South Indian Spot

by

Kokum, an incredible South Indian restaurant, will win your heart with their style of traditional cooking. This authentic Southern Indian cuisine inspired restaurant does not have the Tandoori Chicken and Nann one would expect from the usual Indian restaurants. Southern Indian cuisine is one that is inspired by herbs and spices, and the heavy use of more coconut milk and no actual cream or butter. In fact, they really only use a small amount of clarified butter in certain dishes.

For those of you who love Indian cuisine but suffer from lactose intolerance, this restaurant will be your one safe haven where your allergy will not be affected by menu items! The menu is descriptive and mouthwatering, while the cocktails and wines are very nice from a pairing perspective. The Kokum Cocktail is spicy, lively, and adds a smoky sensation to many dishes when tasted together. The Shrimp Kokum, a spicy appetizer, is cooled down and so delicious when tasted with the Riesling by the glass. The Kumily Chicken Fry, another spicy appetizer, has quite the kick, but is cooled by the must order Yogurt Sauce. For the vegetarians, you can enjoy the delicious and fun appetizer, Idili Vadai, which consists of a Steamed Rice Cake and Lentil Donut with an array of dipping sauces; this is a fun one!

For entrees, items like the Lamb Keerai and the Chicken Stew are a must have for the meat lovers, as both are absolutely incredible. The lamb is cooked perfectly medium rare and smothered in a tomato, lentil, and spinach sauce. The Chicken Stew is full of coconut, flavor, and spice, and makes for the perfect cooler night comfort meal. The Kerala Paratha, a bread dish that is surprising, multi layered, and so much fun to eat, is delicious when dipped in the stew, lamb sauce, or yogurt sauce.

For those of you who love Indian cuisine, or want something less traditional, then you have to head over to Kokum. This delightful little spot will win your heart, and your stomach, upon your first visit.

Kokum is located at 106 Lexington Avenue.
