Twists and Turns Abound in Neal Goldstein’s Latest Novel

I like leaving the world behind and immersing myself in a good series. Yes, there are stories that are better left to just one novel. But then there are those characters that deserve to have their stories told. What I find is that the author then has a difficult job in creating original stories and making sure that the main character and the supporting characters are well-developed, novel after novel. Then you have the fact that the author has to create a series where each novel can stand on its own.

At first I did have trouble keeping track of all the characters in Fishtown, by Neal Goldstein, but as soon as the two stories got underway I was able to differentiate between everyone. This only served as a push for me to get my hands on the first novel of this series, Murder and Mayhem in Manayunk, so that I can fully understand the development, the characteristics, and the history between certain characters. Not only does Jack Regan have to prosecute a case that goes back years, but now he also has to worry about the fact that dangerous and rogue Mossad agents Nooris and Rabinowitz have been released from Guantanamo Bay, he is going to get married to the love of his life, and to make matters worse, the deathly Shona Cohen is still on the loose.

Trust is something that is brought up throughout this story a lot because there are times when some of these characters have to trust their enemy, for example to bring their son back home safe, or to start a new life. When you have a strong, bad-ass, and stoic character as Shona Cohen who is misunderstood and has had a rough life you can’t help but root for her and hope that she does get a second chance. You also have the dynamic between Jack Regan and Michael Flynn, who is Liam’s biological father, who act civil towards one another because they both care deeply for Kate and Liam. This fast paced story takes us from one problem to the other with ease and finesse.
