FAME by Alex Mitow is known for hosting innovative, food, art and music pop-ups in New York City, and this past weekend the company brought us Broth Fest, a fun, interactive broth-filled extravaganza. On Saturday, New Yorkers trekked through the rain to the South Street Seaport, where Sugarcube, an inflatable pavilion that looked, literally, like a giant sugarcube, enclosed the event space. The event, which was put on in collaboration with Imagination in Space and supported by Yelp and the Howard Hughes Corporation, had some of New York City’s top restaurants battle it out for the titles of the best bone broth.
The event was actually perfect for the dreary New York day, as the tasty broths and beers warmed you right up. There were seven restaurants serving up broths — Katz’s Deli served a classic matzoh chicken broth; Fame by Alex Mitow served kobe beef broth with dry sake, lemongrass, star anise, along with other herbs, garnished with chive, chili oils and scallion; Bone Deep & Harmony served a beef broth with diy additions likes chimichurri, thai basil oil and kimchee juice; Baz Bagel served a classic chicken broth with a mini matzoh ball; Caracas Arepa Bar served a beef broth with culantro, mint, yucca, green plantain, yautia, and jalapeños; Belle Reve served a whipped blackened bone broth topped with chillis and herbs and a shot of Wild Turkey bourbon; and Spur Tree served a fish broth with green bananas, potatoes, scallions, garlic, salt and black pepper.
Guests all voted on their favorite broth and by the end of the day, it was a close race. Spur Tree’s Fish Tea broth (recipe below) took home the gold, with Belle Reve’s Blacked Butter Broth just four votes behind.
In addition to tons of warming broths, the event played host to much more than just soups. Brooklyn Brewery beers were being served while DJ duo AndrewAndrew held the stage, followed by a performance by Sylvana Joyce + The Moment. Additionally, a couple of local designers (LéONE, TILLYandWILLIAM, Alotta McGriddles’ Alotta Stuff, OneGround, Misha T) were showcasing and selling a selection of their fashion items, while Yelp provided a fun photo booth. All in all, it was a fun day of sippin’, slurpin’, and tasty broths.
