Sure, moonshine is said to be a thing of the past, but thanks to Ole Smoky, it’s here to stay. Now don’t cringe — we know moonshine is known for its astronomically high proof , but we can attest that this doesn’t taste like something you’d use to remove nail polish. Ole Smoky Tennessee Moonshine is the first federally licensed distillery in East Tennessee, officially opened in 2010. The moonshine, which is meant to be drunk straight from a mason jar, comes in many variations, including the Original Unaged Corn Whiskey, Apple Pie, Moonshine Cherries and more. Their original 100 proof moonshine utilizes a century-old family recipe comprised of 80% corn, with the additional 20% remaining a mystery.

However, we had the opportunity to try two of their other flavors and cannot rave enough about how lip-licking good they are. Ole Smoky’s Apple Pie Moonshine combines pure apple juice, ground cinnamon and additional spices with homemade moonshine, producing a 40 proof blend of heaven. This sweet masterpiece is best left alone, either enjoying it on ice or heated up. We love that it is not too sweet, as you might imagine from its name, but they really crafted the perfect recipe that is sure to impress literally everyone.

We also sampled a jar of Ole Smoky’s Moonshine Cherries, which includes fresh maraschino cherries soaked in 100 proof moonshine. Their website says it best – “each cherry says a sweet hello followed by a warm goodbye.” They are good enough (and boozy enough) to enjoy on their own, but also make a great addition to any cocktail. Best of all, once you’re out of cherries, you’ve still got some cherry moonshine waiting for you to gulp down. Other outstanding flavors include blackberry, lemon drop, peach, strawberry, charred and white lightnin’. Get your hands on a jar asap!
