R17 Might Just Be The Best New Scene in the City

New York loves a good rooftop and nothing excites the masses like giving them a new place to drink. R17 opened up at the end of 2018 in the South Street Seaport and quickly became a hot destination. The rooftop locale includes a cocktail lounge and restaurant with a sleek, sexy vibe and unique fireplaces ensconced in the walls.

There’s nothing here that’s not to love. From the well-crafted cocktails to the small, but impeccably executed menu of small plates, everything is masterfully done. Executive Chef Cassidy Hallman has comprised a menu of Modern American small plates, each one better than the next, and it changes seasonally. All menu items are great for sharing, making it an ideal spot for date night or a friends’ night out.

Here’s what we tried: The Diver Scallop Tartare, which comes with brioche, yuzu, and is generously topped with perigord truffles, is a sight to behold. The presentation alone leaves you salivating, but it’s that first sweet bite that makes you fall in love. Pair that with the Hamachi Crudo, and you’re in for an outstanding meal. Comprised of chipotles, honey-soy, and pickled mustard seeds, all of the flavors commingle on your tongue and really pack a punch.

For guests who aren’t into seafood, other options include the inspired Cauliflower & Mushrooms, which are crispy and flavorful, served with lemon confit, pine nuts and nasturtium, and the tender Wagyu Beef Skewers, topped with togarashi and chives. We also tried the Chicken Tonkatsu, which was recommended, but it was our least favorite dish of the night — which isn’t to say it wasn’t good, it was very good! But compared to all of the interesting, exciting flavors of the other dishes, it didn’t stand out.

Mixologist Mark Murphy complements the dinner menu with truly innovative cocktails, some of which are available on nitro tap. You can’t go wrong with The Edmont, made with Jim Beam Rye, Laphroaig 10-Year Mist, Blanc Vermouth, Honey and Lavender, topped with frothy egg white. The London Mule is a great option if you’re looking for something a little lighter and most refreshing, or the Nomikai Sour if you want something more outside the box. You can also enjoy one of their many beers, ciders or wines, if that’s more your bag, baby.

While you while the night away, don’t forget about dessert. You can choose from the Coconut Yuzu Creme Brûlée with Shisho Granita, Yogurt with Cashew Granola and Fresh Passion Fruit, or their tasty Cheese Plate. Partner one, or all of these, with a digestif from the bar and you’re bound to end your night on a high note.

It may be far west, but R17 is one of the best new spots in Manhattan and is the kind of place that makes my job exciting. I can’t wait to go back.
