Coffee might be what keeps New Yorkers alive during the day, but cocktails are what we turn to come nighttime. That’s why coffee shop Hole in the Wall switches gears in the evening by turning into after hours hot spot Sugar Momma, where you can now grab a bite to eat and some seriously good libations.

The intimate venue is instantly eye-catching with glowing red lighting, films projected on the back wall (we got to watch Vicky Cristina Barcelona when we dined there) and beautiful florals on every table. Not to mention, this restaurant knows how to keep the night alive with its festive playlist of 90s hip hop tunes.

The food here includes Australian-inspired dishes, from Crispy Pork to Truffle Beef & Shroom Burger. We started off with a couple of their small plates and immediately could see why every table was full. The Edamame and Avocado Dip gave a new twist to a classic appetizer, with pomegranate seeds adding a hint of fruitiness to the dip and perfectly crunchy chips to dip. We were also impressed with the Burrata, which was served with fresh melon, prosciutto and bread. The combination was unexpected but refreshing, and we gobbled it right up.

We then moved on to entrees. The Roasted Veggies was not your typical vegetarian dish. It was beautifully plated, as tasty as any meat dish I’ve ever had, and topped with a delicious spicy sauce. We also tried their Grass-Fed Wagyu Rib Eye, which was tender and flavorful. Flown in straight from Australia, this special cut of meat is worth a try.

The restaurant may not be serving up desserts yet, but their cocktails, aka “The Good Stuff,” will more than satisfy. Momma’s Martini was my cocktail of choice for the evening, which comes with a shot of Prosecco on the side that you can either drink separately or add to the cocktail (after the flame dies down, of course). For those with a smokey preference, you can try Smoke’n, which includes Mezcal, grapefruit syrup, lime, simple syrup, hot sauce and soda. There are eleven signature cocktails to choose from, as well as wines and a couple beers.

Sugar Momma is the great new place in town to head for a fun girls’ night out!
