Learn Belgian Beer: Terroir Schools in More Than Just Wine

by

Terroir Beer

Terroir is more than just a trendy wine bar with many locations. They serve incredible craft beers for every palate preference and recently held a Belgian Beer class in their Brooklyn location in Park Slope. The beer class was very informative and was taught by one of the restaurant’s managers. Allison, the manager, was funny, outspoken, and has been with the company for a long time. She was very knowledgeable about the beers and made the class very entertaining, while still giving class goers their money’s worth in beer education.

The class had six different Belgian ales ranging in color and flavor variations. Now some of you may say, what’s the difference between Ale and Lager? Well, the Lager is a bottom fermenting beer while the Ale is a top fermenting beer. There was a sour beer snuck into the tasting, as well–Odue Geuze, and if you are not a sour beer fan this may be one you want to stay away from. The fifth beer was an intriguing ale, aged in port casks, called Hof ten Dormaal. This brew was so delicious and would be a great addition for a special occasion.

Terroir Beer

A fun fact learned in class is that there is a beer which is made strictly by Monks and overseen by them as well, called Tripel style brew. There are only 7 in the world. Abbey brews on the other hand are made in the same style, but are not made my monks or at Monastery, and the two should not be confused.

Terroir has many locations with classes offered quite often. However, if you happen to miss a class that’s not a problem! You can stop into a Terroir bar any time–the staff is very knowledgeable and would be more than happy to teach you a thing or two and give you some great recommendations.

Other locations include the East Village, Tribeca, Murray Hill, and At the Porch on 10th Ave & 15th Street. Definitely a must try for beer lovers and wine lovers! Check out their schedule of events here.
