Crackle Debuts Documentary After the Murder of Albert Lima

by

Now streaming free on Crackle, After the Murder of Albert Lima showcases the story of a son’s desperation to seek justice for his father’s murder. The documentary begins with Albert Lima’s son, Paul, who hires bounty hunters to help him track down the man responsible for his father’s death back in the year 2000.

His father, a hardworking and charitable man, helped out a friend’s family business in Honduras with a sizable loan. After numerous legal battles over the money, Lima retains control of the business and upsets members of the Coleman family, to whom he gave the loan. Oral Coleman, convicted of killing Albert Lima, is still free in Honduras. Filmmaker Aengus James says, “At the time we filmed this documentary, a report on NPR named Honduras the murder capital of the world; it has a case closure rate of just 2.5%.”

Even though Coleman was convicted of the murder, in order to be arrested, he had to be hand-delivered to the federal prison. However, Coleman’s status and frequent bribes allowed him to remain a free man. Paul thus hires a couple of bounty hunters to help him track down and deliver Coleman to prison. “A man hires two bounty hunters to help him kidnap his father’s killer in Honduras…what could possibly go wrong?” states James.

James has a point. The documentary opens with Paul stocking up on guns, tasers and handcuffs for his well-intentioned, yet extremely flawed adventure. Throughout the film, viewers are teased with an inside look at the corruption in Honduras, the flawed justice system, and a son’s need to avenge his father’s death. What happens when the system that’s supposed to protect you and give you justice fails? What happens when regular citizens take the law into their own hands? This messy situation just scratches the surface of these questions, while showing the lengths we will go to when we are wronged.
