Modern Dance in Three Parts

by

Dance is a powerful medium that allows one to creatively express themselves. It not only can awaken the dancers’ perceptions, but it can also awaken those who view the performance, helping them to see things in new ways. I believe that is just what Artistic Director Tiffany Rea-Fisher aims to do with the Elisa Monte Dance’s (EMD) “Emerged Nation.”

Showing at the Flea Theater in Tribeca, “Emerged Nation” is a performance comprised of three distict movements illustrating the country’s shift in culture and diversity. In the first movement called Tilted Arc, eight dancers of Elise Monte Dance delve into the most notorious public sculpture controversy in New York City. The sculpture in Foley’s Square of the same name by Richard Serra, which was removed in 1989 because of its “obstruction” to the pathway. The choreographed dance beautifully traces the location of the sculpture and demonstrates the larger ideas of obstruction such as immigration and separation.

The second movement, which resonated with me the most, celebrates the uniqueness and assimilation of Black/Native culture in America. Interpreting the roles these cultures play in our society, the dance performance was set to an exhilarating light show and soundscape of house, electronic and tribal music created by Twelve 45.

Paying homage to a culturally diverse New York City, the sights and sounds of the vivacious neighborhoods and areas are the backdrop of the final movement entitled, Kinetic Kinship. From the colorful, flowing costumes to the music and precise intentional movement, this latest show is magical and intense. It beautifully explores and celebrates inclusion, diversity, culture and assimilation.

Elisa Monte Dance is a renowned modern dance company founded by Elisa Monte, a former Martha Graham principal, 39 years ago. The dance company is currently helmed by Artistic Director Tiffany Rea-Fisher who joined EMD in 2014. The 39th season is at the Flea Theater from November 21st-24th.
