Say What?! We Never Learned This in Class!

by

Stefana M. Albu is a mind reader…it’s as if she took all my thoughts after graduation and transformed them into a well-articulated and clever book. In this quick read, We Never Learned This in Class!: The Reality of Life After College, Albu addresses the hardships facing college graduates in this day and age — from struggling to find the right career to missing having your friends right down the hallway from you at all times.

What’s so great about this book is that it gives its readers something to relate to — finally, we know that someone else out there is going through the same thing we are! We are at a crossroads in our life where we can no longer stay out late drinking till the wee hours of the morning, we can barely afford rent, we spend our days desperately seeking approval from those above us and it’s harder than ever to connect with our friends who have dispersed all over the country. I think that the most important take away from this book is that you are not alone. Whether you were at the top of your class or struggling somewhere in the middle, we are all going through the same thing and we will all learn and grow and get through it. Albu leaves no stone unturned in this foray into the difficulties facing the millennial generation. However, there’s no need to get depressed — the author provides uplifting advice and ends the book on a good note, leaving readers hopeful for the future and reminding you not to sweat the small stuff.

Not only is this book helpful to post-grads, but it can serve as a guide for undergrads, as well.

We Never Learned This in Class!

We Never Learned this in Class! by Stefana M. Albu couldn’t have possibly come across my desk at a better point in my life. Although written by a Wheaton College and Brown University graduate, and for those with newly acquired Bachelor degrees, this book came to me (a community college soon-to-be sophomore) as a shining beacon of hope. With witty humor, inspiring quotes, and a personal tone, it almost feels as if Albu is sitting face to face with you, providing advice as an older sibling.

This self-help book covers just about every range of worries for an undergrad, and, of course, a graduate. Albu addresses all of the fears of an undergraduate in 117 well-thought pages. From career changes, to losses of friendships, even down to coping with heartbreak, Albu is there with an open shoulder and a box of tissues. She lets you know that these things aren’t the end of the world and even provides solutions. Coming from someone working towards an Associate’s, who is always thinking about the future, this book really breaks things down and shows you the realities you’ll face after the caps have been tossed and the gowns have been vacuum-bagged and put into storage.  While many sections had a very “for the ladies” feel, I’d definitely recommend the guys out there to give it a read; I know I’ll be passing this along to some of my worrywart peers. Enjoy!
